How to brush properly (most of us don't)
Two minutes, soft bristles and a lighter hand than you think. Hannah explains the technique that protects both teeth and gums.
Most people brush too hard and too fast. The goal is to disturb plaque, not scrub the tooth away.
The technique
- Hold the brush at a 45° angle to your gumline.
- Use small, gentle circles, covering two or three teeth at a time.
- Brush every surface: outer, inner and chewing.
- Finish with your tongue, then spit; don't rinse, so the fluoride keeps working.
How long, how often
Two minutes, twice a day. A timer or an electric brush with a built-in one makes this effortless.
Which brush?
Soft bristles, replaced every three months, or sooner when they splay. A small head reaches back molars more easily.
