Teeth whitening: what actually works
From toothpastes to chairside gels: what each option can and cannot do, and who should skip it.
Tooth colour is partly genetic and partly lifestyle. Coffee, tea and red wine stain the surface; age darkens the dentine underneath.
Whitening toothpaste
Gently polishes surface stains. Useful for maintenance, but it will not change your natural shade.
Professional whitening
Medical-grade gels penetrate enamel and can lighten teeth by several shades in one visit, with gums protected throughout.
Who should wait
If you have untreated cavities, gum disease or very sensitive teeth, treat those first. Pregnant patients are advised to postpone.
